Why is the output a PNG?
PNG supports an alpha (transparency) channel, which is what lets the removed background show through. JPEG can't store transparency.

How clean are the edges?
It does well on clear subjects and defined edges. For tricky cases like fine hair or glass, the hosted Pro version produces noticeably cleaner cutouts.
